SEO Topic Cluster Generator

Turns one core topic into a full pillar-and-article cluster for content planning.

Saves about ~2 hrs per week

What it does

  • Takes a core topic and maps its search subtopics
  • Cross-checks against what's ranking (serp gaps)
  • Outputs a pillar + supporting articles plan
  • Includes search intent and target keywords per article

How it works

  1. Core topic entered
  2. AI proposes subtopics and keywords
  3. SERP data validates gaps
  4. Pillar + articles plan generated

What's included

  • Core-topic input
  • Subtopic mapping
  • SERP gap validation

Set it up yourself

Follow these 4 steps in order. You will need accounts for: OpenCrawl, Claude.

Step 1: Enter the core topic

  1. Create the workflow input: core topic, primary keyword, target audience.
  2. Add your domain so the plan notes which articles you already have.
  3. Choose how deep the cluster should go (e.g. 10-15 articles).
  4. Test the input fields.

Watch out: One core topic per run — cross-topic clusters become unfocused content plans.

Step 2: Map subtopics

  1. Build: 'Brainstorm 20 subtopics for {core topic} that searchers would look for. Group into: how-to, comparison, definition, problems, tools. Return JSON array with subtopic, intent, primary keyword.'
  2. Instruct: subtopics must be real queries people type, not editorial headings.
  3. Paste with API key.
  4. Review the generated list and prune duplicates.

Watch out: Real-query discipline separates an SEO cluster from an undifferentiated blog outline.

Step 3: Validate with SERP data

  1. Connect OpenCrawl to check which subtopics have ranking pages (and who ranks).
  2. Flag subtopics where your keyword has weak or no content — those are the gaps.
  3. Sort: high-intent + gap = build first.
  4. Write the ranked list to the plan.
  5. Test on your main topic.

Watch out: Prioritize gaps, not volume — writing article #12 on a saturated query with no differentiator is wasted budget.

Step 4: Finalize the plan

  1. Output: 1 pillar page + N supporting articles with keyword, intent, and internal-link target.
  2. Save into your content planner (sheet or Notion).
  3. Mark which articles already exist (skip them).
  4. Assign priority order for the next quarter.
  5. Review the plan against your editorial calendar.

Watch out: Include the internal-link target column — clusters without interlinking decay back into isolated posts.
