Content Gap Analyzer

Scans competitors' content vs yours and lists the gaps you should close first.

Saves about ~2 hrs per week

What it does

  • Crawls competitor content pages (blog, guides, resources)
  • Maps their topics vs your published topics
  • Scores gaps by relevance and search intent
  • Outputs a prioritized build list

How it works

  1. Competitor content crawled
  2. Topics extracted and deduped
  3. Diffed against your content map
  4. Ranked gap list produced

What's included

  • Crawl scope
  • Topic normalization
  • Gap scoring + priority list

Set it up yourself

Follow these 4 steps in order. You will need accounts for: OpenCrawl, Claude.

Step 1: Configure the crawl scope

  1. Add your top competitor content domains (their blog/guide sections).
  2. Configure OpenCrawl to list their article URLs and titles.
  3. Add your own content map: your existing articles with titles + keywords (export from your CMS).
  4. Set the crawl depth (top-level article listing is enough).
  5. Test the crawl returns titles.

Watch out: Crawling a competitor's entire domain wastes budget — scope to article-listing sections only.

Step 2: Extract and normalize topics

  1. Dedupe competitor titles into normalized topic slugs (lose articles/conjunctions).
  2. Match near-duplicates (different wording, same topic).
  3. Tag each topic with intent (how-to, comparison, listicle).
  4. Compare against your content map topic-slugs.
  5. Produce: topics they cover and you don't (gaps).

Watch out: Normalization is where accuracy lives — '10 Ways to Save Time' and 'Time-Saving Tips' must resolve to one topic or every report overstates gaps.

Step 3: Score the gaps

  1. Build: 'Rate each content gap for our business. Return JSON: {topic, relevance 0-100 (to our ICP), intent, difficulty (head terms vs long tail), suggestedFormat}. '
  2. Weight relevance highest — competitor topics in their niche but not yours are noise.
  3. Sort: high relevance + low difficulty = build first.
  4. Paste with API key.
  5. Review the ranking against your instincts.

Watch out: Relevance to YOUR ICP beats popularity — a topic they rank #1 for but that attracts the wrong audience is a trap.

Step 4: Output the build list

  1. Write the ranked gaps to your content planner: Topic, Intent, Priority, Suggested Format.
  2. Mark ones to repurpose vs create new.
  3. Assign to your editorial calendar for the quarter.
  4. After publishing, re-run the analyzer to update the map.
  5. Review monthly.

Watch out: Update your content map after publishing — a gap list that claims you still lack an article you just launched erodes trust in the tool.
