Set it up yourself
Follow these 4 steps in order. You will need accounts for: OpenCrawl, Claude.
Step 1: List competitor URLs
- For each competitor add 3 URL types: pricing page, changelog/product page, blog.
- Put them in a sheet 'Competitor Watch' with columns: Competitor, Page Type, URL, Last Seen Hash.
- Keep the list to your 3-5 real competitors — 10 competitors of everyone is noise.
- Verify each URL still resolves before crawling.
Watch out: Pricing pages (often JS-rendered) may need a rendering crawler; blog pages are usually simple HTML.
Step 2: Set up the crawler
- Configure OpenCrawl or a change-detection tool to crawl the URL list weekly.
- For each page, capture a content hash or the extracted text.
- Store the hash in the Last Seen column.
- When the hash differs from last week, flag the row 'changed'.
- Test by manually editing a test page and confirming detection.
Watch out: Ignore trivial diffs: strip nav/scripts before hashing, or every page 'changes' weekly from ads and analytics tokens.
Step 3: Add the digest prompt
- Build: 'Here are competitor page changes this week. For each: what changed (quote the diff), why it might matter, and whether it looks like a response to our positioning. 300 words max.'
- Restrict to meaningful changes: ignore CSS/minor text changes.
- Instruct: separate fact (observed change) from inference (why it matters).
- Paste with API key.
- Test on a fake change.
Watch out: Separate fact-from-inference keeps the digest honest — otherwise you start reacting to your own speculation.
Step 4: Schedule the send
- Schedule the crawl+digest every Monday 8am.
- Email the digest to yourself/team (and post a copy to a private channel if used).
- Keep a 'Watch History' tab to spot patterns (annual pricing pushes etc.).
- Review the digest with your product roadmap monthly.
- Tune the URL list when competitors rebrand products.
Watch out: Watch history is the gold — one-off pricing notes are trivia; the pattern tells you when the market moves.
