Competitive Site Change Monitor

Knows the moment a competitor changes pricing, hire pages, or messaging.

Saves about ~2 hrs per week

What it does

  • Crawls key competitor pages on a schedule
  • Detects meaningful changes to content and structure
  • Summarizes what changed and why it might matter
  • Alerts you on the changes that count

How it works

  1. Competitor pages crawled
  2. Diffs computed since last run
  3. AI summarizes meaningful changes
  4. Alert sent for the important ones

What's included

  • Page list
  • Change detection
  • Alert rules

Set it up yourself

Follow these 4 steps in order. You will need accounts for: OpenCrawl.

Step 1: List competitor pages

  1. For each competitor add the pages that matter: pricing, product, careers, about, changelog.
  2. Put them in a sheet with a 'last seen hash' column.
  3. Verify each page is crawlable (renders the content).
  4. Test the crawl fetches text.
  5. Trim dead URLs.

Watch out: Include hire pages — a sudden careers-page change is a leading indicator of strategic shifts (and often hiring the role you're defining).

Step 2: Set up the crawler

  1. Configure OpenCrawl (or a change-detection tool) to crawl the list daily.
  2. For each page, compute a normalized content hash (strip nav/scripts).
  3. Compare to last-seen hash; store the new one.
  4. Ignore trivial changes (timestamps, cookie banners).
  5. Test by editing a test page.

Watch out: The normalization step is what separates real changes from noise — page footers with 'last updated' timestamps will churn hourly if not stripped.

Step 3: Add the diff prompt

  1. Build: 'Here is what changed on this page this week. Summarize the meaningful changes and why each might matter (pricing move, new messaging, hire signal). Ignore minor text/CSS.'
  2. Restrict to actual observed changes.
  3. Paste with API key.
  4. Test on a controlled edit.
  5. Tune if the summary over-analyzes trivia.

Watch out: Keep it factual — 'pricing page now shows $X' beats 'they're pivoting to enterprise' unless the evidence supports it.

Step 4: Set the alerts

  1. Alert rules: pricing changes always; messaging shifts when a keyword set changes; hire pages when key roles appear.
  2. Deliver a weekly digest + immediate ping for pricing.
  3. Post to your competitive Slack channel.
  4. Test the alert paths.
  5. Review the URL list monthly.

Watch out: Price changes alert immediately; everything else digests weekly — an instant alert for a tagline tweak burns alerting credibility.
