VIP Customer Segmentation

Your best customers segmented automatically with lifetime value and re-buy signals.

Saves about ~1 hr per week

What it does

  • Computes lifetime value per customer
  • Segments: VIP, growing, at-risk, new, lapsed
  • Scores re-buy likelihood from recency/frequency
  • Outputs a segmented list ready for campaigns

How it works

  1. Order data pulled
  2. LTV + recency/frequency computed
  3. Automatic segment assignment
  4. Segment list produced

What's included

  • Customer data pull
  • Segment rules
  • RFM scoring + exports

Set it up yourself

Follow these 4 steps in order. You will need accounts for: Shopify, Sheets.

Step 1: Pull the customer data

  1. Shopify customers + orders export (or API) with purchase dates and totals.
  2. Load into a sheet: Email, Total Spend, Order Count, Last Order Date, First Order Date.
  3. Compute LTV = total spend.
  4. Compute avg order value and purchase frequency.
  5. Test the numbers against one known customer.

Watch out: Base it on actual orders, not registry counts — LTV from averages guesses wrong for half your audience.

Step 2: Define segments

  1. VIP: LTV top 10% OR 5+ orders AND within 60 days.
  2. Growing: 2-4 orders, recent.
  3. At-risk: previously frequent, last order > 90 days.
  4. New: first order < 30 days.
  5. Lapsed: no order > 180 days.
  6. Put the definitions in a sheet so they're editable.

Watch out: Make segment rules adjustable — a static hard-coded definition goes stale with your store.

Step 3: Score re-buy

  1. Recency/frequency/monetary scoring: days-since-last-order, orders-per-month, avg order.
  2. Compute a 0-100 re-buy score from those three.
  3. Test that recent-frequent high-spend customers score highest.
  4. Add the score column.
  5. Spot-check against intuition.

Watch out: RFM catches the silent VIP — occasionally high-spend customers who haven't returned are your best at-risk targets.

Step 4: Output for campaigns

  1. Produce segment tabs (VIP, at-risk, growing) with emails + scores.
  2. Push VIP and at-risk lists to your email platform segments.
  3. Draft placeholder campaigns per segment (VIP: early access; at-risk: win-back).
  4. Update the segment sheet weekly.
  5. Track campaign performance per segment.

Watch out: Push the lists into your email tool weekly — an analysis that stays in a sheet is a report; one that feeds campaigns is revenue.
