Cart Abandonment Recovery
A timed, personalized recovery sequence for the 70% of carts that get abandoned.
Saves about ~3 hrs per week
What it does
- Triggers the moment a cart is abandoned
- Sends a 3-step sequence referencing the actual items
- Includes a gentle incentive at the right step
- Personalizes product lines based on what's in the cart
How it works
- Cart abandoned in Shopify
- Step 1 email fires after 1 hour
- Step 2 after 24 hours, Step 3 after 72
- Sequence pauses the moment they purchase
What's included
- Shopify connection
- 3-step sequence
- Personalization + stop rules
Set it up yourself
Follow these 4 steps in order. You will need accounts for: Shopify, Gmail.
Step 1: Connect Shopify
- Log in to Shopify admin → Settings → Apps and sales channels → Develop apps → Create an app.
- Choose 'Admin API integration', name it abandoned-cart, and create it.
- In API scopes, enable read_orders, read_products, read_customers, and read_checkouts (all read-only).
- Install the app and copy the Admin API access token — it starts with shpat_.
- Store it as a secret in your automation platform.
Watch out: Use a custom app token (shpat_) not the storefront token — the storefront token cannot read orders.
Step 2: Set the sequence
- Build the workflow trigger: Shopify 'Checkout Created' or query abandoned checkouts hourly.
- Config timings: email 1 at 1 hour, email 2 at 24 hours, email 3 at 72 hours.
- Write the three emails (see templates below) in your email tool.
- Map the checkout email and cart line items into each email.
- Test with a real checkout you abandon (use a test product).
Watch out: The first email must go out fast (1 hour is the sweet spot) — every hour of delay kills recovery rate.
Step 3: Add the product callout
- In each email template, add the dynamic product block: item name, thumbnail, and price.
- Add 'You left these behind' as the section header.
- For visual personalization, use the line-item image URL from the checkout data.
- Keep the cart link in every email so it's one click to return.
- Test the dynamic fields render correctly with a test cart.
Watch out: The dynamic cart link must be the actual checkout URL — a generic 'shop now' link loses the shopping context that makes the email work.
Step 4: Add the stop rule
- Connect the 'Order Created' trigger in Shopify.
- When an order comes in for the same email/checkout, cancel the remaining sends for that cart.
- Store cart->email in the workflow so matching is reliable.
- Also stop if the cart is completed (recovered) manually.
- Verify: place the abandoned cart, then complete purchase, confirm no email 3 arrives.
Watch out: The stop rule is what prevents you emailing a buyer about a cart they already purchased — always test the stop path.
