Bank Alert Digest

Large or unusual bank activity becomes a daily plain-English digest.

Saves about ~30 min per week

What it does

  • Reads your bank alert emails
  • Flags large or unusual transactions
  • Summarizes the day's activity in plain English
  • Logs every flagged transaction to a sheet for review

How it works

  1. Bank alert emails scanned
  2. Transaction amounts and names extracted
  3. Unusual activity flagged by rules
  4. Daily digest emailed to you

What's included

  • Alert parsing
  • Transaction flagging
  • Daily digest

Set it up yourself

Follow these 4 steps in order. You will need accounts for: Gmail, Sheets.

Step 1: Enable bank alerts

  1. In your bank's online banking settings, turn on email alerts for: all transactions, large transactions, and low balance.
  2. Make sure the emails are being sent to an address you can scan (set up a dedicated Gmail label + filter: 'bank-alert').
  3. Some banks allow daily summary alerts — check.
  4. If only SMS is available, use email-to-SMS gateways or skip.
  5. Test by making a small transfer.

Watch out: Alerts must land in a scannable inbox — a bank that only sends SMS will need a different path (most support email).

Step 2: Add the extraction prompt

  1. Build: 'Parse this bank alert. Return JSON: {type, amount, merchant, account, time, balanceAfter, flagged}.'
  2. Categorize merchant where possible (utilities, food, transfer).
  3. Keep the raw text in a notes column.
  4. Paste with API key.
  5. Test on 3 different bank alert styles.

Watch out: Bank email formats differ wildly between banks — test with your actual bank's format, not a sample from the guide.

Step 3: Set the flags

  1. Flag rules: amount > threshold (e.g. $1,000), unknown merchant, repeated same-amount transfers, balance dropping below warning.
  2. Add a manual review list for anything AI marks unusual.
  3. Never auto-alert on routine payroll/rent.
  4. Log flagged transactions with reasons.
  5. Test the flag rules.

Watch out: A flag rule that fires daily for payroll noise will train you to ignore the digest — whitelist known recurring items.

Step 4: Schedule the digest

  1. Daily schedule (e.g. 6pm) that aggregates the day's alerts.
  2. Build a short plain-English summary of the flagged items.
  3. Email it to yourself; include the sheet link.
  4. Compare the digest to your bank app occasionally to verify completeness.
  5. Tune the threshold after a month.

Watch out: The digest is your 'second pair of eyes' — an occasional cross-check against the bank app validates that the scanning isn't missing notifications.
